Bold Shapes and Strong Contrast: 6 Best Modern Quilt Pattern Picks
Fold a traditional scrap quilt over a gray sofa and it can look busy: dozens of small prints, all asking for attention at once. Many modern quilts create a different kind of order through bold geometry, high contrast, negative space or an unexpected grid. Good modern quilt patterns plan where the plain areas go, so the background looks intended rather than leftover.

Six picks made the shortlist: five single patterns and one book, in two styles. Three are Carina Gardner’s patchwork designs on white: a plus-sign quilt, a triangle lap quilt and a book of twelve projects. Three are art quilts built mostly from solid colors: two pinwheels of rotating triangles and a crystal quilt. The notes under the cards cover how quilters define modern, how negative space works, solids and silk, and how a modern top is usually quilted.
Modern Quilt Patterns in Two Styles: Graphic Patchwork and Art Quilts
Many Creative Fabrica listings with “modern quilt” in the title are seamless digital papers and geometric barn quilt files for laser-cut wood. Those are cut files, not sewing patterns, so none of them is here.
TL;DR: Two kinds of modern: Carina Gardner's patchwork on white (a plus quilt in four sizes, a triangle lap quilt and a book of 12 projects) and three art quilts in solid colors, from a 21 inch pinwheel to an advanced crystal quilt.

Best plus quilt in four sizes
1. Patchwork Plus Quilt Sewing Pattern
Best for: a plus-sign quilt in lap, twin, queen or king size. Designed by carina2.
- Lap, twin, queen and king sizes
- Pattern pieces print on 8.5 x 11 in paper
- The cover shows plus signs and outlined squares on a white background
Negative space in a familiar shape: the plus signs and framed squares float on white, as the cover shows. With four sizes it can start as a lap quilt, and the same design is available again when you are ready for a bed-size version.

Best triangle lap quilt
2. Afternoon Quilt Sewing Pattern
Best for: a lap-size quilt with a triangle design on the cover. Designed by carina2.
- Lap size
- Pattern pieces print on 8.5 x 11 in paper
- The cover shows rows of half square triangles on white inside a black and white striped border
The listing is two lines long, so most of the visual detail comes from the cover: triangles in red, black and soft prints set in a white field, framed by a black and white striped border. Choose it if you want modern contrast on a lap-size project.

Best beginner-friendly collection
3. Simply Modern Patchwork Quilts
Best for: 12 modern quilts and smaller projects in one book. Designed by carina2.
- 12 projects: quilts, mini quilts, pillows and table runners
- Written for beginners, confident beginners and intermediate sewers
- Step-by-step binding, backing and piping instructions
- A digital copy plus printable PDF patterns
The only pick here that spells out the finishing steps (binding, backing, piping). Choose it if a few small modern projects sound better than one large quilt.

Best first designer pinwheel
4. Humdinger Designer Pinwheel Patchwork Quilt Pattern
Best for: a 21 inch square pinwheel wall quilt. Designed by dena.dale.crain.
- Finished size 21 x 21 in, border widths included in the pattern
- One large (22 in) fat quarter for the background plus scraps
- The listing says piecing is not difficult, but appliqué skills may help
- Add seam allowances to all patches and borders
The smallest of the three art quilts, and the listing itself says piecing is not difficult, though appliqué skills may help. In my view its 21-inch format makes it a sensible place to try the technique before Fractures.

Best bold geometry
5. Fractures Designer Pinwheel Patchwork Quilt Pattern
Best for: a 27 inch square quilt of tessellated triangles in solids. Designed by dena.dale.crain.
- Finished size 27 x 27 in
- Pattern for one full-scale tessellated triangle, pieced four times
- Small amounts of many solid colors, plus 30 x 30 in freezer paper or fusible interfacing
- No seam allowances included; suggested quilting lines are marked
Every seam is a fabric change, the listing says, so the whole design depends on the order of colors. The original was solid silk dupioni with extra wide borders rolled to the back.

Best for one print among solids
6. All That Glitters, Crystal Quilt Patchwork Pattern
Best for: a crystal quilt built from solids and a single print. Designed by dena.dale.crain.
- Full quilt top pattern plus dimensions for the borders
- 8 to 12 fabrics in a range of colors and values; the original used one printed silk
- Optional 28 x 24 in fusible interfacing or freezer paper as a piecing guide
- Requires advanced sewing skills; no seam allowances included
The listing is clear that this is advanced. The cover shows a blue, cream and gold medallion where the single print appears in only a few patches, which is how one print can sit among solids without taking over.

What the Modern Quilt Guild Counts as Modern
The Modern Quilt Guild, which runs the QuiltCon show, describes modern quilts as primarily functional and inspired by modern design. Its list of traits that often appear includes bold colors and prints, high contrast, graphic areas of solid color, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space and alternate grid work. Updated traditional blocks, sometimes called modern traditionalism, count too.
No quilt needs every trait. Patchwork Plus and Afternoon take classic shapes, plus signs and half square triangles, and give them a lot of white. The pinwheel and crystal quilts lean on solid color and strong geometry instead. Both routes are modern quilting; they just start from different places.
Negative Space Is Part of the Design
Negative space is the less visually active area around the main pieced or appliquéd design. It may use large background pieces, repeated blocks or both, and it is where the eye rests. On the Patchwork Plus cover, some framed squares are pieced in low-contrast prints and almost disappear into the white, while the red and navy plus signs stand out.
Large plain areas also show everything sewn into them. Uneven quilting lines, a shadow from a dark seam allowance under a white patch, or a crease from storage are easier to see on white than on a busy print. Where the construction allows it, press dark seam allowances away from pale background pieces; otherwise follow the pattern’s pressing plan.
Solids, Silk and Patterns Without Seam Allowances
Two of the three art-quilt listings describe silk originals: solid silk dupioni for Fractures, and solid silks with one printed charmeuse for All That Glitters. Humdinger lists a background fat quarter and scraps without specifying a fiber. The listings work as patterns for any fabric you choose, and in my view cotton solids are the easier first try, since silk frays and slips. Each pattern prints at full scale (Adobe Acrobat Reader, Poster setting at 100%), and Fractures and All That Glitters can be traced onto freezer paper or fusible interfacing that serves as a sewing guide.
None of the three includes seam allowances, so add them to every patch as you cut. With solids there is no print to hide a mismatched point, which is one reason to test the technique on Humdinger’s smaller 21-inch format, keeping in mind that small patches can be fiddly in their own way.
Quilting a Modern Top
Modern quilts are often quilted with lines and shapes rather than hearts and flowers: straight lines, grids, circles, spirals, or landscape textures such as waves and pebbles. Straight lines are a practical place to start on a home machine, and a walking foot keeps the three layers from shifting as they feed through.
Line spacing changes the feel. Lines set far apart keep a lap quilt soft; very dense lines make it stiffer, which suits a wall quilt better than one meant for the sofa. The Fractures pattern also marks suggested quilting lines, so check the printout before planning your own. For bed and lap sizes in pieced designs, the quilt patterns guide compares them with standard mattresses.
Modern Quilting Questions
What is the 60/30/10 rule for quilting?
The 60/30/10 idea is an optional color-planning guideline borrowed from interior and graphic design, not a construction rule: about 60 percent of the quilt in a main color, 30 percent in a second color and 10 percent in an accent. In a modern quilt the 60 is often the background, which is how white does so much work on the Patchwork Plus cover.
Can a modern quilt use prints?
Yes. Bold and graphic prints are on the guild’s own list of traits. Carina Gardner’s covers use her printed fabric collections against white, and All That Glitters places one print among solids.
Are modern quilt patterns good for beginners?
Some are. Simply Modern Patchwork Quilts is written for beginners through intermediate sewers. The crystal quilts are a different matter: All That Glitters says outright that it requires advanced sewing skills.
A Trial Run Before the Full-Size Top
White backgrounds and solid fabrics make alignment, pressing and quilting especially visible, so test your fabrics small first. Sew one block of plus signs or a few triangles in your chosen palette, pin them to a wall and look from across the room: if the accent disappears or the white looks gray, change the fabric now rather than after cutting a queen. The same test works for the art quilts. Humdinger is smaller at 21 inches, but it still needs seam allowances added and careful work on the tessellated triangle, so treat it as a smaller project rather than an automatic warm-up for the larger modern quilt patterns here. More quilts by size and type are in the quilts section.
