Dress the Table for Every Holiday: 6 Best Table Runner Patterns

Dress the Table for Every Holiday: 6 Best Table Runner Patterns

A bare table looks unfinished, and a store-bought runner may be the wrong length, or the seasonal design you wanted may sell out quickly. A handmade one is sized to your table and changes with the seasons. The best table runner patterns give you a finished size, templates and clear steps for the appliqué or the patchwork.

Dress the Table for Every Holiday: 6 Best Table Runner Patterns

Before the list, one measurement worth having: the length of your table. Three of the six can be made to any length, and the other three have a fixed finished size.

Table Runner Patterns with Fixed and Flexible Lengths

Crochet, knitted and macrame runners are a different craft and stayed off the list, as did printable fabric graphics. Every pick is sewn or quilted.

TL;DR: Five runners and one appliqué panel: a 31 x 15 inch floral quilt runner, two retro floral runners and a clam shell runner that can be any length, a 44 x 15 inch bunny runner with a matching pillow and a 19 x 8 inch Christmas HOME design to build a runner around.

Measure the Table First

Both tutorials in the search results start in the same place: measure the length and width of the table. One styling guide suggests an overhang of 6 to 12 inches at each end and a width of 12 to 18 inches; a runner can also stop short of the edges and sit on the tabletop, which keeps the ends out of laps.

With those numbers, a 60 inch table takes a runner of roughly 72 to 84 inches to hang over both ends. For a runner that stays on the tabletop, subtract the setback you want at both ends from the table length. The 31 inch and 44 inch runners may suit a small table, a sideboard or the on-the-table style; only the adjustable designs reach an overhang length without modification.

Making an Appliqué Runner Longer

The three runners from the same designer (floral patchwork, flower power and the clam shells) are tutorials first: they show how to build the runner, then how to add the appliqué on top. You cut the background to your own measurement and space the motifs along it, and the designer’s sample sizes are only a reference.

For a fixed design, in my view the neatest place to add length is often at the ends, with a plain or pieced band in one of the runner’s fabrics, so the center keeps its proportions. The HOME panel works the same way at a smaller scale: at 19 x 8 inches it needs borders on the long sides to reach a typical runner width and plain ends to reach the length.

Batting and Backing That Lie Flat

A runner has to lie flat under plates and glasses, so a low-loft batting is the usual pick; one of the tutorials recommends exactly that and used cotton and bamboo battings. The same tutorial cuts the backing to the size of the front, sews the layers together, turns it right side out through an opening and then quilts it.

A bound edge is the other route. It takes longer, and in my view it suits the quilted runners here. Whichever finish you choose, a walking foot helps the layers feed evenly on long straight quilting lines, though it is not required.

Spills, Trims and Washing

If the finished runner will be washed, prewash all the washable fabrics the same way before cutting; it lowers the risk of uneven shrinkage around the appliqué. The three runners from the floral collection list ribbon, lace, tassels, beads and ribbon roses among the materials. Leave those off a runner that will sit under everyday meals and go through the wash often, and save them for a holiday or display piece. For an autumn table, Fall Stars in my fall quilt patterns can be made as a runner as well as a wall hanging.

Runner Size and Set Questions

Can I sew the bunny runner without the pillow?

Yes. The PDF holds two separate patterns, a 44 x 15 inch runner and a 15 x 15 inch pillow, so either one can be made alone.

Is a table runner a good project for beginners?

It has every stage of a quilt, from top to batting, backing, quilting and the edge finish, in a long narrow shape that fits under a home machine. The 31 x 15 inch floral runner is described as designed for beginners as well as experienced quilters.

Can the HOME panel be used without a runner?

Yes. The listing also suggests pillows and wall hangings, and at 19 x 8 inches (or 20 x 8) the panel needs borders on every side for either one.

Each Runner on a 60 Inch Table

  • 31 x 15 inch floral appliqué: covers about half the length, a centerpiece rather than a full runner.
  • 44 x 15 inch bunny runner: leaves about 8 inches of bare table at each end.
  • Floral patchwork and flower power: the 120 cm (about 47 inch) samples leave about 6 inches at each end; both can be cut to any length.
  • Clam shell: the 150 cm (about 59 inch) sample ends almost flush with the table.
  • HOME panel: 19 or 20 inches, so plain ends and borders make up the rest.

A 60 inch table is only an example, so swap in your own length. Among these table runner patterns, the adjustable ones are the only route to an overhang without redrafting. More sewing for the table is in Home and Kitchen.
