Small Christmas Quilts for the Wall and Table: 6 Best Patterns

The tree is up and the stockings are out, yet the wall above the sofa still holds the same framed print it shows in July. A small quilt changes that corner of the room, and it folds away into a closet until next December. The Christmas quilt patterns in this list are sized for a wall, a door or a tabletop rather than a bed.

Small Christmas Quilts for the Wall and Table: 6 Best Patterns

Two Santas, a cardinal in a holly wreath, four Christmas animals, a church under a crescent moon and a winter sky full of geese: six small patterns that range from 12 to 28 inches on the longest side. None of them is a throw or bed quilt, and the cardinal is an appliqué design you finish into a pillow or hanging yourself. Under the cards I go through choosing a size for your wall, colors that still look right after December 25, the two techniques these patterns use and how to finish a small quilt so it hangs flat.

Six Small Christmas Quilt Patterns for Walls and Tables

Many listings with “quilt” in the name are laser-cut barn quilt ornaments, patchwork PNG prints or digital paper, and none of those are here. Mug rugs and plain table runners stayed out too; the one topper on the list includes steps for finishing it as a hanging mini quilt.

TL;DR: Five small quilt projects and one appliqué: a paper-pieced winter hanging with trees and flying geese, a 28 x 14 inch church panel, a 12 inch Santa mini quilt, a Santa topper with a rod pocket and four animal blocks in a mini quilt layout, plus a 16 inch cardinal wreath sold as an appliqué pattern only.

Quick Picks

Winter's Night Flight – Christmas quilt pattern PDF

Best paper-pieced wall quilt

1. Winter's Night Flight

Best for: a winter wall hanging that can stay up after Christmas. Designed by SleepingCatCreations.

  • Seasonal wall hanging made of 16 squares, 6 inches each
  • Paper pieced, with full-size paper piecing templates
  • Blue geese and green trees, which the designer suggests sewing from scraps
  • The cover shows trees, flying geese and white stars

Trees and geese instead of Santa, so the designer's idea of hanging it before the holidays and leaving it up through February makes sense. It is the only pieced project here, and paper templates are a common route to sharp points. The listing describes full-size templates rather than written steps, so it suits someone who has paper pieced before.

Pattern PDF "The Night Before Christmas" – Christmas quilt pattern PDF

Best scene panel

2. Pattern PDF "The Night Before Christmas"

Best for: a tall Christmas Eve scene for a hallway or door. Designed by Quilting patterns.

  • Appliqué wall hanging, 28 x 14 inches
  • Winter night scene: a church, a crescent moon, bows and holly berries
  • Rated for advanced beginners and experienced quilters
  • The preview shows template and layout pages

A narrow, tall panel that fits a door or the narrow wall space beside a mantel. The preview shows template and layout pages, but the listing does not state a page count.

PDF Pattern for Santa Mini Quilt – Christmas quilt pattern PDF

Best small Santa quilt

3. PDF Pattern for Santa Mini Quilt

Best for: a 12 inch Santa for a quilt stand or a gift. Designed by Sher's Pattern Shop.

  • 12 inch Santa mini quilt or Christmas wall quilt
  • The Santa template also works as a 12 inch quilt block
  • Hand appliqué and machine appliqué both explained, with tips and illustrations
  • The cover notes that a sewing machine is required

Choose this one if you want a finished Christmas quilt that is small enough for a shelf. The designer pairs it with a quilt hanger or stand as a gift, and the same template can join a sampler of 12 inch blocks later.

PDF Pattern for Santa Table Decor – Christmas quilt pattern PDF

Best table-to-wall quilt

4. PDF Pattern for Santa Table Decor

Best for: one Santa piece that works on the table or the wall. Designed by Sher's Pattern Shop.

  • Table topper or runner that can be finished as a mini quilt, 14 1/2 x 20 inches
  • Santa and holly appliqués
  • Steps for hand appliqué, machine or hand quilting and a rod pocket for hanging
  • Complete supply list and full-color illustrations

The rod pocket steps are what set it apart: the same Santa piece can be used as decorative table décor or hung from its rod pocket. Same designer as the 12 inch Santa, so the two would hang well together.

Christmas Animal Appliques – Christmas quilt pattern PDF

Best beginner mini quilt

5. Christmas Animal Appliques

Best for: a four-block mini quilt with Christmas animals. Designed by Beginner Sewing.

  • Four Christmas animals (hippo, koala, Rudolph, owl) and one tree appliqué
  • Each appliqué fits an 8 x 8 inch block
  • Suggested four-block mini quilt layout with cutting instructions
  • Blocks can be finished one by one or joined into a larger project

Each animal is its own 8 inch block, so you can stop after one or keep going to the four-block layout the PDF suggests. In my view the cutting instructions for that layout make it a gentle first Christmas quilt.

Christmas Cardinal Appliqué Pattern – Christmas quilt pattern PDF

Best appliqué-only wreath

6. Christmas Cardinal Appliqué Pattern

Best for: a red and green wreath appliqué for a pillow or small wall piece. Designed by Quilting patterns.

  • Finished appliqué 16 x 16 inches
  • Red cardinal inside a holly wreath with berries and a gold bow
  • Appliqué templates, a full-size sketch and appliqué instructions
  • Suggested for pillows, wall hangings, table runners and quilts

This is the most traditional red-and-green design in the group. It is an appliqué pattern only, with templates, a full-size sketch and appliqué instructions; the cover shows it as a pillow, and turning it into a wall quilt means planning the borders, batting and binding yourself.

Where the Quilt Will Hang Decides the Pattern

Measure the spot before you choose. A narrow panel like the 28 x 14 inch church scene suits a door, a hallway or the narrow wall space beside a mantel. Square pieces, such as the 16 inch cardinal or the 12 inch Santa, sit better above a shelf, on a quilt stand or in a group of two or three.

Borders change the final size. The cardinal size is for the appliqué itself, so any border you add makes the hanging larger, and a pattern made of blocks grows with every block you add. If two Santa pieces from the same designer will hang side by side, cut both backgrounds from the same fabric so they read as a pair.

Red and Green, or a Winter Quilt That Stays Up

Many Christmas quilts are everyday patterns sewn in holiday fabric: the piecing stays the same and the palette does the work. A quilted Christmas piece in red, green and white, the traditional Christmas colors, says December right away. A Christmas quilt in icy blues, whites and soft greens reads as winter instead, so it can hang from late November until the snow melts.

That is the case for Winter’s Night Flight, with its blue geese and green trees, while the Santa projects and the cardinal belong to December. Novelty prints with Santa or reindeer have the same limit; snowflakes, stars and plaids stretch the season.

Pieced Points or Appliqué Shapes

  • Foundation paper piecing (Winter’s Night Flight): you sew fabric onto printed paper templates along the lines, then tear the paper away. It gives sharp flying geese and tree points. A shorter stitch than usual makes the paper easier to remove.
  • Fusible appliqué: shapes are traced onto fusible web, ironed to the background and stitched around the edges with a zigzag, blanket or straight stitch. If the PDF specifies fusible appliqué, trace the shapes on the paper side of the web and check whether the templates are reversed.
  • Hand appliqué: edges are turned under and stitched by hand. Both Sher’s Pattern Shop patterns explain this and the machine method side by side.

Machine appliqué does not always mean fusible web; some methods use a stabilizer or turned edges instead. None of these listings names fusible web in its description, so read the supply list of the PDF you buy before ordering notions.

Sleeves, Corner Pockets and Binding on a Small Quilt

A wall quilt needs something to hold a rod. A hanging sleeve is a fabric tube sewn to the back along the top edge, and the Santa topper pattern shows its own rod pocket. On a mini quilt, two fabric squares folded into triangles and caught in the top corners of the binding hold a thin dowel just as well.

Cut the backing and batting a few inches larger than the top on every side, then trim after quilting. For binding, measure around the quilt and add about 10 to 12 inches for joining and the corners: a 12 inch square needs roughly 60 inches. A low-loft batting keeps a small wall quilt flatter than a lofty batting. A free fabric yardage chart has room to write down the backing and binding fabric before you shop.

Christmas Quilt Questions

Can I turn these into a bed-size Christmas quilt?

None of the six is written as a throw or bed quilt, but the block-based ones can grow. The Santa template doubles as a 12 inch block, and the animal appliqués fit 8 inch blocks, so repeating them with sashing makes a larger quilt. The panel and the paper-pieced hanging are written for their own sizes.

Do I need a sewing machine?

For most of them, yes. Both Sher’s Pattern Shop covers say a sewing machine is required, even though the appliqué itself can be stitched by hand, and paper piecing is normally sewn by machine.

What is the 60-30-10 rule in quilting?

A color guideline borrowed from interior design: about 60 percent of the quilt in a main color, 30 percent in a second color and 10 percent in an accent. For a Christmas wall quilt that could be a cream background, green holly and a small amount of red.

How big is a mini quilt?

There is no fixed size. The two minis here are 12 inches square and 14 1/2 x 20 inches, small enough for a quilt stand or a hanger on a door.

Read the PDF Contents Before You Buy

Before choosing one of these Christmas quilt patterns, check whether the PDF contains a complete quilt layout or only the appliqué templates. The cardinal is sold as an appliqué with a full-size sketch, so the borders, batting, binding and hanging method are yours to plan. For a wall piece, also confirm the finished dimensions and whether hanging steps are included: of the six listings, only the Santa topper mentions a rod pocket. Then check that PDF’s own supply list before buying fabric and notions. For ornaments, softies and other December projects, see the Christmas sewing projects.
