Wrap, Tiered or Shirt Dress? 8 Best Dress Sewing Patterns to Sew Next
Most of us have stood in a fitting room holding a dress that fits the waist but not the bust, or the length but not the hips. That is usually the moment people decide to learn to sew. A dress is also the project that teaches the most: a bodice, a skirt, a neckline, sleeves and a hem in one garment. The right dress sewing patterns make that first dress feel doable, with clear sizes, a sensible fabric list and instructions you can follow on a weekday evening.

The biggest difference between these eight patterns is the bodice: loose on the gathered dress, tied on the wrap, ending just under the bust on the empire waist dress and collared on the shirt dress. The guide after the patterns looks at how a bodice should fit, which closure each dress uses, woven versus knit fabric and how to read a fabric chart. Short styles have their own list of mini dress sewing patterns.
Dress Sewing Patterns Worth Printing
Doll dresses did not make it, and neither did illustrated “guides” that show a finished dress without real pattern pieces. Each of the eight is a printable pattern for an adult dress.
TL;DR: Eight dresses that differ mostly in fit and fabric: a wrap dress and a gathered dress for light wovens, a tiered ruffle dress with puff sleeves, an empire waist dress, a linen kimono dress, a plus-size shirt dress, a beach dress and a sleeveless knit with a frill hem. Sizes run from XS to 5XL across the listings.

Best wrap dress
1. Wrap Dress Sewing Pattern PDF
Best for: a tie-waist dress for work and weekends. Designed by PatternFactory.
- Sizes XS to XL
- A4 and A0 PDF files, seam allowances included
- Tie closure at the waist and optional sleeves
- Made for light wovens: viscose, cotton or linen
- Detailed instructions in English for confident beginners
The tie closure sets the waist, so the fit there adjusts on the day you wear it. The bodice still has to match your bust, and of the light wovens it lists, viscose should give the softest drape.

Best easy everyday dress
2. Gathered Dress Sewing Pattern PDF
Best for: a relaxed dress with very little fitting. Designed by PatternFactory.
- Sizes XS to XL
- Loose-fit bodice with a gathered skirt
- Optional sleeves
- A4 and A0 PDF files, seam allowances included
- Step-by-step instructions in English; cotton, linen or viscose
Likely one of the easier options here to fit, since the listing describes a loose-fit bodice over a gathered skirt. Gathering is the one technique to practice on a scrap first.

Best tiered dress
3. Layered Ruffle Dress PDF
Best for: a romantic tiered dress with puff sleeves. Designed by jananunya.
- Sizes US 2 to 16 (XS to 4XL), bust 30 to 44 in
- Tiered ruffle skirt, puff sleeves with elastic and a bow tie
- A4 file with a 5 x 5 cm test square and an A0 file for a print shop
- 1/2 in seam allowance included; needs a 12 to 18 in invisible zipper
- Fabric: about 155 x 200 cm, linen, cotton or light denim
Buy the full fabric amount for this one: the listing calls for 155 x 200 cm of fabric plus interfacing for the bow.

Best vintage-style dress
4. Empire Waist Dress
Best for: a Regency-inspired high waist dress. Designed by jananunya.
- Sizes US 4 to 14, XS to XXXL, bust 32 to 42 in
- High waistline just under the bust with an A-line skirt
- Gathered neckline and full sleeves, as in the line drawing
- A4, US Letter and A0 files
- Step-by-step illustrated tutorial
The listing pitches it for Regency costumes, themed events and historical reenactments. In my view, a plain cotton could make the same high waist and A-line skirt feel less costume-like.

Best kimono-style dress
5. Kimono Dress Sewing Pattern Victoria
Best for: a relaxed below-the-knee dress with a wide belt. Designed by TakeAndSew.
- This listing: sizes L, XL and XXL; XS to M sold as a separate listing
- Below-the-knee dress with set-in sleeves and a dropped shoulder
- Pockets in the side seams and a wide tie belt
- A4 and plotter files
- Video tutorial, marked as an easy pattern
Open the size chart in the gallery before buying, because this listing includes sizes L, XL and XXL only. The PDF also explains how to change the length, useful if you are taller or shorter than the models at 164 and 167 cm.

Best shirt dress
6. Shirt Dress Sewing Pattern Susanna
Best for: a classic button-front shirt dress in plus sizes. Designed by TakeAndSew.
- This listing: sizes 3XL, 4XL and 5XL; other sizes are listed separately
- Collar with a stand, button front, long sleeves with cuffs
- Back yoke with a pleat, pleated front pockets and side seam pockets
- Detachable belt
- Step-by-step guide plus video instructions
Expect many small steps: a collar with a stand, cuffs, a back yoke with a bow pleat and a button front. The video lessons make those extra steps easier to follow.

Best summer beach dress
7. Womens Beach Dress Pdf Pattern
Best for: a breezy strappy dress with a handkerchief hem. Designed by craftbook99.
- Sizes S, M, L and XL
- V-neck on thin straps with a pointed handkerchief hem
- A0 printable PDF pattern
- Step-by-step sewing instructions with pictures
It comes only as an A0 file, so plan on copy-shop printing.

Best knit party dress
8. Asymmetrical Hem Dress Sewing Pattern
Best for: a sleeveless knit dress with a frill hem. Designed by shevonfer68.
- Sleeveless dress with an asymmetrical frill hem
- Sewn in 4-way stretch knit; a serger or overlocker is recommended
- A4 (36 pages), US Letter (41 pages), A0 and a layered projector file
- 3 pages of step-by-step instructions with images
The designer sewed it in a 4-way stretch knit and says other fabrics can work for a different look. My practical read: a woven version would need more room, so keep to knit unless you can test the fit.

Fitting the Bodice: Bust, Waist and Ease
Most of the fitting on a dress happens above the waist. Measure around the fullest part of your bust, your natural waist and the fullest part of your hips, then choose the size from the pattern’s chart, not from the label in your store-bought clothes. Pattern sizing often runs differently from ready-to-wear, and it varies between designers too. A free sewing measurement chart keeps those numbers on one page, ready to hold next to each pattern’s chart.
Finished garment measurements, when a pattern gives them, show the ease: the room between your body and the dress. A loose-fitting dress has several inches of it at the bust, while a fitted bodice has very little. If your bust and hips fall in different sizes, many patterns let you blend between the two sizes by drawing a new line along the side seams from one size to the other.
A bodice with less to fit is the easier start. The gathered dress has a loose-fit bodice, and on the empire waist dress only the short section above the high seam has to fit, because the skirt falls from there.
Zippers, Buttons and Ties in These Eight Dresses
The closure often decides how many new skills a dress asks for. Here is what the listings say:
- Ties: the wrap dress closes with a tie at the waist. The kimono dress has a wide tie belt, which shapes the waist rather than closing the dress.
- Invisible zipper: the tiered ruffle dress lists a 12 to 18 inch invisible zipper. A zipper foot made for invisible zippers helps a lot here.
- Buttons: the shirt dress buttons down the front and at the cuffs, and the pattern says press buttons (snaps) can replace them.
- Not named: the gathered, empire waist, beach and knit dresses do not name a closure in the listing, so look at the line drawing and the supply list before you buy notions.
A dress with no opening has to pass over your head and shoulders, so it works when the neckline or the fabric gives enough room. Ties, elastic or a few back buttons are the usual way to skip a zipper on a first dress.
Woven or Knit, Crisp or Drapey
Only the frill-hem party dress is meant for knit. The wrap, gathered and tiered dresses list woven fabrics such as linen, cotton or viscose. A knit pattern relies on stretch for its fit, so the same pattern pieces cut from a woven fabric can end up too tight, and a woven pattern sewn in knit will fit differently. Evening dresses in drapey satin and stretch jersey have their own list of formal dress sewing patterns.
Drape matters as much as fiber. Viscose and rayon move with you and suit a wrap dress, but they slide while you cut. Cotton poplin and linen are stable, press well and hold the shape of a collar or a ruffle tier, which makes them the easier choice for a first dress. If linen is the fabric you have in mind, my linen dress pattern guide covers prewashing and which weight suits which dress.
Reading the Fabric Chart Before You Buy Cloth
Fabric width changes how much length you buy. Fabric commonly comes in widths such as 44 to 45 or 58 to 60 inches, and a narrow bolt can need much more yardage for the same dress. The tiered ruffle dress shows it clearly: it asks for 155 x 200 cm of fabric, or 360 cm at a 100 cm width.
As a very rough guide for 58 to 60 inch fabric and a middle size, a sleeveless knee-length summer dress takes about 2 to 2.5 yards, a dress with sleeves 2.5 to 3 yards, and a maxi dress or a tiered one 3 to 4 yards. Larger sizes, a loose-fitting dress with extra width and wasteful layouts need more. The pattern’s chart for your size comes first; the two TakeAndSew dresses keep their fabric amounts in the listing’s photo gallery. Add extra for a directional print or for matching stripes, and prewash the fabric the way you will wash the dress.
Before You Cut: Dress Questions
What is the first dress a beginner should sew?
A loose summer dress in a stable woven fabric, with few pieces, mostly straight seams and no zipper. In this list the gathered dress, which the listing calls great for beginners, is the closest match. Many people sew a skirt first, which teaches a waistband and a hem.
Are there plus size dress patterns on this list?
Yes. The Susanna shirt dress is a 3XL to 5XL listing, the tiered ruffle dress goes up to 4XL and the empire waist dress to XXXL. Compare your bust measurement with each size range, since letter sizes differ from one pattern company to the next.
Can I use these patterns to sew dresses for girls?
No, all eight are women’s sizes. For children’s clothes, including dresses, see the kids sewing patterns.
Can I sew a dress without a serger?
For the woven dresses, yes. A zigzag stitch or French seams finish the edges on a regular machine. The knit party dress lists a serger or a 4-thread overlocker, though a stretch stitch on a regular machine can also sew knit seams.
How do I print a PDF dress pattern?
All eight are sold online on Creative Fabrica, where you buy the PDF and print it yourself. Print at 100% scale, measure the test square on the first page, then tape the pages together. An A0 file goes to a copy shop.
What a Size Chart Cannot Fix
Even the right size from these dress sewing patterns is drafted for an average body of that size. A full bust, a long torso or sloping shoulders can still need an adjustment, and the chart will not show it. The fitted bodices here, on the wrap, the zipped ruffle dress and the collared shirt dress, reveal it most, so a muslin of the bodice in cheap fabric is worth making first. The gathered and beach dresses forgive far more. Other styles are in the dress patterns section.
