Top 3 Linen Dress Patterns, Plus How to Prewash the Linen

The first hot week of summer, the polyester dresses stay on the hanger and the one linen piece in the closet gets worn every other day. Then a homemade one comes out of the wash a size smaller, because the fabric was never prewashed. A linen dress pattern is only half the plan: the other half is getting the linen ready, so the dress you sew in May still fits in August.

Top 3 Linen Dress Patterns, Plus How to Prewash the Linen

This shortlist is short on purpose: only three dress listings named linen and also included sewing instructions. You get a shirt dress, a fitted sleeveless dress and a flounce sundress. Further down: how to prewash, which weight of linen suits which shape, and seam finishes that hold up to frequent washing.

Three Linen Dress Patterns: Shirt Dress, Fitted and Sundress

Dresses already in my general dress roundup are not repeated. Listings without sewing instructions, or with instructions only promised for later, were left out, and so were dresses whose listing does not mention linen at all.

TL;DR: Three dresses with linen named in the listing: a relaxed button-front shirt dress, a fitted sleeveless dress and a flounce sundress in eight sizes.

Best for a first linen dress

1. Shirt Dress Sewing Pattern PDF

Best for: a relaxed button-front dress with a collar. Designed by PatternFactory.

  • Button front, collar, relaxed fit, optional waist tie and sleeve variations
  • Sizes XS to XL
  • A4 and A0 files with seam allowances and step-by-step English instructions
  • Suggested for light to medium-weight woven cotton, poplin or linen

The relaxed fit and the listed fabrics make this an easy match for linen. One of the product images calls it beginner-friendly, though the buttonholes and collar still take patience on a first dress.

Best fitted linen dress

2. Valerie Linen Dress Pattern XS-XXL

Best for: a sleeveless dress with a closer fit. Designed by Pattern Best.

  • Listed finished sizes XS to XXL; check the size chart in the gallery
  • The cover shows a sleeveless dress with a shaped bodice
  • Pattern without seam allowances: add 1 to 2 cm
  • Three PDFs: instructions, pattern pieces and a guide to reading the pattern
  • The listing says the instructions are not suited to beginners

Choose this if you already sew garments and want something more fitted than a loose linen dress. Add seam allowances before cutting, since none are included.

Best linen sundress

3. Mosey Ruffle Flounce Dress PDF Pattern

Best for: a summer dress with a flounce over the bodice. Designed by craftbook99.

  • Sizes 6 to 20, size chart in the gallery
  • Suggested fabrics: cotton, linen, polyester or similar; the photos show thin straps
  • Layered projector file and a 4-page A0 file
  • Step-by-step instructions with pictures, cutting instructions and fabric requirements

Eight sizes from 6 to 20, and the file lists fabric requirements. A flounce tends to move better in a lighter linen; a heavy one can stand away from the body.

Prewash Linen Before You Cut

Linen shrinks, mostly in the first few washes, so wash and dry the yardage before it ever meets the pattern. Use the same water temperature and drying method you plan to use for the finished dress: if the dress will go in the dryer, so does the fabric now. Finish the cut ends with a zigzag first, or the edges will fray into long threads in the machine.

Prewashing also softens many linens. Press the fabric with plenty of steam before laying out the pattern, and line the pattern pieces up with the grain: linen cut off grain can produce a twisted side seam.

Which Linen Weight for Which Dress?

Light to medium-weight linen is the usual choice for summer linen dresses, from a simple shift to a sundress. Medium weight suits a shirt dress with a collar and buttons, because it holds a press and the details stay crisp. Flounces and gathers tend to look better in a lighter, softer linen; a heavy one can stand away from the body and make ruffles look stiff. Light linen works for warm-weather tops as well, and some of my summer top sewing patterns list it.

A linen and cotton blend may feel softer from the start and crease less than pure linen, depending on the blend. Linen and viscose blends usually drape more, which flatters a loose dress but makes cutting a little slipperier. For any of these, read the fabric suggestions in the listing first: the shirt dress asks for light to medium-weight woven fabric.

Seams, Needles and Necklines in Linen

  • Finish every raw edge. Linen frays, so serge, zigzag or use French seams on straight seams like the side seams.
  • Needle: a universal 80/12 is a common starting point for medium linen, and 70/11 for fine, light linen. Test on a scrap first.
  • Staystitch necklines and armholes right after cutting, so the curves do not stretch while you work.
  • Press each seam with steam before crossing it with the next one. Linen responds well to pressing, and a pressed seam is easier to topstitch.

Linen Dress Questions

Is linen a good fabric for a beginner?

Mostly yes. It is a stable woven with no stretch and holds a crease well, which makes pressing and sewing straight seams easier. The care points are fraying and keeping the pieces on grain.

How much linen do I need for a dress?

It depends on your size, the length, the sleeves and the fabric width, so use the pattern’s chart for your size and fabric width rather than a general rule. The Mosey dress lists its fabric requirements. Buy a little extra if the fabric seller warns of high shrinkage.

Will a linen dress always wrinkle?

Yes, some creasing is part of linen. It softens with washing, and a linen and cotton blend tends to crease less, but a relaxed shape like the shirt dress wears its wrinkles better than a fitted one.

Caring for the Finished Linen Dress

Wash the dress the way you prewashed the fabric, which reduces the risk of unexpected shrinkage. Many sewists air-dry finished linen and give it a quick steam afterward, which is gentler on the fabric than the dryer. Whichever linen dress pattern you start with, keep a scrap of the prewashed fabric to test the iron temperature before pressing the dress.
