Open Backs and Halter Necks: 7 Best Summer Top Sewing Patterns
By July the closet splits in two: the tops you actually wear and the ones that feel too warm by noon. Shop-bought summer tops are often thin polyester, or the halter you like comes only in one print. A summer top sewing pattern lets you pick a breathable cotton or linen, set the length where you want it and decide how much back or shoulder to show.

The seven picks lean toward the shapes people ask for when it gets hot: crop tops with ties, two very different halters, a square neck strap top, and tops whose back does the talking. After the cards come fabric choices for heat, fit notes for halters and open backs, and how to finish a light top so the neckline lies flat.
Seven Summer Top Sewing Patterns with Halters, Ties and Open Backs
Patterns already featured in my general top sewing patterns roundup are not repeated here, and knitting patterns for summer tops were skipped. Each one below is a sewing pattern with instructions.
TL;DR: For warm weather: a flutter sleeve crop top with a bow, two halters (one high-necked and pleated, one backless with a bow), a square neck strap top, a twist back top with a cutout, an open back textured top and a crop top with front ties.

Best tie crop top
1. Tie Back Crop Top PDF Sewing Pattern
Best for: a cropped blouse with flutter sleeves and a bow. Designed by craftbook99.
- Sizes 8 to 18, size chart in the gallery
- Suggested fabrics: printed cotton, linen or polyester
- Layered projector file, A0 file and a base-size PDF with seam margins marked
- Step-by-step instructions with pictures, cutting instructions and fabric requirements
The photos show a V-neck, short flutter sleeves and a big bow at the waist, the classic summer crop blouse. The file lists fabric requirements, so once you know your size and fabric width you can work out how much to buy.

Best backless halter
2. Romspattern™ HalterBow Crop
Best for: an open back halter for parties and beach days. Designed by RomsPattern.
- Halter neckline, cross-back straps and a gathered bow-back
- Skill level: confident beginner
- Multi-size PDFs in A0, A4 and US Letter
- Step-by-step illustrated instructions, size guide and fabric usage chart
The most backless design on this list: the back is mostly straps and a gathered bow. Decide what you will wear underneath before cutting, because there is no back panel to hide straps.

Best minimalist top
3. The Xenia Top
Best for: a fitted square neck top with straps. Designed by Creative Fabrica Needlework.
- Fitted silhouette, square neckline and supportive straps
- E-book with step-by-step instructions and photos, in English and German
- Materials list, fabric cutting guide and measurement chart
- The cover shows sizes XS to XXXL
Plain enough to sew in several colors and wear with everything from jeans to a floral skirt. A fitted top relies on accurate measurements, so the measurement chart is the first page to read.

Best high neck halter
4. Pleated Halter Top Pdf Sewing Pattern
Best for: a halter with a collar that covers more. Designed by craftbook99.
- Sizes 8 to 16, size chart in the gallery
- Pleated front gathered into a high collar, as the photos show
- Suggested fabrics: cotton, linen or polyester
- The cover mentions a layered PDF and step-by-step sewing instructions
A halter for anyone who wants bare shoulders but a covered front. The size chart lists bust at armhole, waist, hem width and back length, so compare it with your measurements first.

Best everyday back detail
5. Cutout Twist Back Top
Best for: a loose top with a twist and cutout at the back. Designed by shevonfer68.
- Sizes XS to XXL in the measurement chart
- Sewn by the designer in plain poplin
- A4 and US Letter files of 16 pages, A0 and a projector file
- Three pages of sewing directions with images
From the front the photos show a simple top with short cap sleeves; the twist and cutout are only at the back. That makes it easier to wear to work or on errands than a halter.

Best open back with ties
6. Gigi Textured Top
Best for: a sleeveless top with a textured front and tie back. Designed by Creative Fabrica Needlework.
- Textured woven front panel and an open back with ties
- Adjustable back for fit
- E-book with step-by-step instructions and photos, in English and German
- The cover shows sizes XS to XXXL
The ties make the back adjustable at the opening. The texture on the cover comes from the woven front panel itself, so read the cutting guide for how that panel is built before choosing fabric.

Best front tie crop
7. Cropped Top Sewing Pattern with Front
Best for: a crop top tied at the front, to wear with skirts and jeans. Designed by Pattern Best.
- This listing is size M; the same design is sold in other sizes as separate listings
- Front ties; the cover shows long flared sleeves
- A4, US Letter and A0 formats
- Step-by-step instructions included
Buy the listing for your size, since each one holds a single size. The long flared sleeves on the cover make it a top for warm evenings rather than midday heat.

Fabrics That Breathe on a Hot Day
Most of these designs are drafted for woven fabric. Cotton poplin, cotton lawn and linen are easy to sew because they do not shift or stretch under the presser foot, and lightweight cotton and linen are usually breathable. The craftbook99 patterns suggest cotton, linen or polyester, and the twist back top was sewn in plain poplin.
Viscose and rayon drape beautifully on a halter but slide around while you cut, so pin closely and use a sharp needle. Polyester holds a print well and resists wrinkles, though it feels warmer than cotton in real heat. Prewash whatever you choose, especially linen and rayon, which can shrink. For prewashing and pressing linen step by step, see my linen dress pattern guide.
Halters, Open Backs and Ties: How They Fit
A halter hangs from the neck, so the fit across the upper chest and under the arms matters more than the shoulder measurement. An open back has nothing to hold the top in place except straps or ties, which is why both halters here and the Gigi top use them. Before you cut good fabric, plan what you will wear underneath: strapless, a bralette meant to show, or a built-in lining if the pattern allows one.
Ties give some adjustment at the opening: a tie back or front tie lets you pull the top closer or leave it looser. They do not replace choosing the right bust and armhole size, though. Fitted designs like the Xenia have less room to adjust, so a quick test version in inexpensive fabric is worth the extra yard.
Finishing Necklines and Armholes on Light Fabric
- Staystitch first. Sew a line just inside the seam allowance around curved necklines and armholes right after cutting, so they do not stretch while you handle them.
- Bias binding is a tidy finish for sleeveless necklines and armholes, and ready-made binding is fine for a first top.
- French seams enclose the raw edges inside the seam, which suits thin cotton, lawn and fabric that frays. They work best on straight or gently curved seams such as side seams.
- Ties: cut them on the grain the pattern marks, stitch, trim the seam allowance, turn them and press well, so they come out flat and even.
FAQ: Sewing Tops for Hot Weather
Can I use knit fabric instead of woven?
Only if the pattern says so. A top drafted for woven fabric will fit looser and may sag in a knit, and the neckline finish is different. Use the fabrics each listing suggests.
How much fabric does a crop top need?
It depends on the size, the sleeves and the fabric width, so check the pattern before buying. Three picks list it for you: the tie crop top includes fabric requirements, the backless halter has a fabric usage chart, and the two e-books include a materials list.
Is a halter top hard to sew?
Some halters are beginner-friendly, since there are no set-in sleeves, but a neat neckline finish and a close fit around the upper chest take care. The HalterBow is rated for confident beginners, and the pleated halter adds a collar and pleats.
Try the Back On Before the Hem
With halters and open backs, the back is where a summer top succeeds or gapes. Baste the straps or tie the ties, try the top on and look in a mirror from behind before you finish the neckline and hem, because a strap that sits 1/2 inch too far out is easy to move at this stage and hard to fix later. Once one summer top sewing pattern fits you this way, write down the changes you made; they are a useful guide for the next top from the same designer. For sleeved and everyday shapes, see the tops and blouses category.
