Wallet and Coin Purse Sewing Patterns: Top 6 for Cards, Change and Keys

Wallet and Coin Purse Sewing Patterns: Top 6 for Cards, Change and Keys

Loose change sinks to the bottom of the bag, a gift card hides between old receipts, and the faux leather wallet cracks along its fold. A fabric wallet and a coin purse or two can sort that out in prints you choose. A clear wallet sewing pattern gives the cutting sizes, shows where the interfacing goes and takes you through the pockets one at a time.

Wallet and Coin Purse Sewing Patterns: Top 6 for Cards, Change and Keys

The list opens with one full wallet, a quilted accordion design, and then moves to the smaller pieces that carry money: three coin purses with a clasp frame or a zipper, a felt case for a gift card and a phone pouch on a strap. Card pocket sizing, interfacing and closures come after the patterns.

A Wallet Sewing Pattern Plus Coin Purses and Cases

Bifold and card wallets on Creative Fabrica are mostly leather patterns with punch holes for hand stitching, a different craft with its own tools, so they are not here. Paper gift card holders, cut files and wallet-named projects for jewelry or tea bags stayed out as well.

TL;DR: A quilted accordion wallet with card slots, a zipper coin pocket and a magnetic snap leads the list. Next come three coin purses (metal clasp, round zip, flat denim zip), a felt gift card case and a crossbody phone pouch with room for cards and keys.

Sizing Card Pockets So Cards Slide In

A standard credit card measures about 3 3/8 x 2 1/8 inches. Make the finished pocket opening slightly wider than 3 3/8 inches, then add the pattern’s seam allowances to get the cut width. Too snug and the card will not go in once the layers are turned and topstitched; too loose and it slides out when the wallet is upside down.

In many fabric wallets the card pockets come from one long strip folded into staggered pleats, pressed and then stitched down the middle into two columns. Count the cards you carry before cutting, because every extra slot adds two layers of fabric to the seam that closes the wallet.

Interfacing Without the Bulk

The supply list for a fabric wallet is usually short: quilting cotton for the outside and lining, interfacing and a closure. The accordion wallet adds lightweight batting, binding fabric, a magnetic snap and a zipper, and suggests cotton remnants or coordinating fat quarters for the patchwork.

Follow each pattern’s own interfacing notes rather than one rule for all. The accordion wallet uses fusible interfacing for structure, the clasp purse listing suggests it only for a firmer purse, and the phone pouch calls for a dense adhesive interlining. If the phone pouch leaves you wanting a little more room on a strap, the crossbody bag sewing patterns start with a phone sling and go up to a saddle bag.

Denim needs less help; the flat pouch is written for old jeans, and its simplest version has no lining at all. Where seams cross, trim the seam allowances and press them before topstitching, so the machine is not fighting six layers at one corner. For more flat and boxed pouches to sew in a batch, see my zipper pouch sewing patterns.

Snap, Frame or Zipper?

  • Magnetic snap: the accordion wallet closes with one, and the phone pouch uses two magnetic buttons. A snap usually goes in before the layers are joined, with a scrap of interfacing behind it so it does not pull through.
  • Metal frame: the clasp purse. The purse pieces have to match the frame, so buy the frame first and cut the fabric second.
  • Zipper: the round and flat coin purses, plus the coin pocket inside the accordion wallet. Attach the zipper foot; when it nears the pull, stop with the needle down, lift the foot, slide the pull behind it and carry on.
  • Plastic snaps such as KAM: need a setting tool and a small hole made with an awl, so set one on a scrap first.

Zipper practice on a coin purse carries straight over to the makeup bag patterns on this site.

Wallet and Coin Purse Questions

What is the difference between a wallet and a coin purse?

A wallet holds flat things, cards and folded bills, in pockets. A coin purse is a small pouch that closes with a zipper or a frame so loose coins stay in. The accordion wallet has both, thanks to its zipper coin pocket.

Is there a men’s wallet pattern here?

No classic men’s bifold is on this list. Made in one plain canvas or denim instead of patchwork prints, the flat zip purse or the accordion wallet looks plainer, in my view.

Can I use vinyl or faux leather instead of cotton?

The gift card case lists faux leather and vinyl along with stiff felt. Hold the layers with clips, since pin holes stay. A slightly longer stitch often sews more neatly on vinyl, so test it on a scrap, and keep a hot iron off it.

Before You Cut: Empty Your Current Wallet

Lay out what your current wallet holds: how many cards, whether you carry bills, how many coins. Then choose the pattern by that pile rather than by the photo. If most of it is cards and receipts, the accordion wallet sewing pattern fits; if it is coins and a key, one of the coin purses is enough. More small projects are under Bags and Pouches.
