From Fashion Dolls to Rag Dolls: 9 Best Doll Clothes Sewing Patterns
Every doll owner knows the moment: the doll has worn the same dress for a month, and a store outfit costs more than a pattern for a whole wardrobe. Doll clothes are also a good use for scraps, since a small dress takes very little fabric. The hard part is the fit, so useful doll clothes sewing patterns say exactly which doll they are made for.

The list runs by doll: a halter party dress for 18 inch dolls, a slip-on dress for fashion dolls, a lined dress for 32 to 35 cm dolls and an elastic strap dress with no fixed size. Then come five sets for small cloth dolls and soft toys from 4.5 to 14 inches tall. After the cards: checking the fit on your own doll, seam allowances and hems at doll scale, fabric and print size, and closures for small hands.
Doll Clothes Sewing Patterns Sorted by Doll Size
Knitted and crochet outfits are not here, and patterns that make the doll itself have their own article. Where a listing names a doll height, the card repeats it; the strap dress is the one pick without a stated size.
TL;DR: For an 18 inch doll there is a halter party dress, for a fashion doll a slip-on summer dress, and for 32 to 35 cm dolls a lined dress. The rest suit cloth dolls and soft toys from 4.5 to 14 inches: a rectangle strap dress, four little dresses, a rainy-day set, jeans with a T-shirt, a gentleman outfit and a princess dress.

- A4 pattern, photo instructions in English and French, plus a video in French
Drafted for dolls of 32 to 35 cm with a waist of about 25 cm, with a fully lined bodice that hides the seams. The back closes with buttons, snaps or hook-and-loop tape, and a French video goes with the photo steps.

Best first doll project
4. Easy Doll Dress Sewing DIY
Best for: a rectangle dress a child can help sew. Designed by Petit Citron.
- A rectangle of fabric gathered on elastic and two straps
- No closure needed
- Can be sewn by machine or by hand
- PDF with step-by-step photos
A gathered rectangle, elastic and two straps, with no closure. The designer suggests it as a child's first sewing project. No doll size is given, and in my view a gathered rectangle adapts to many dolls, though body width and arm position still limit the fit.

A felt raincoat with a lined hood, cotton overalls, felt boots and an umbrella, in two sizes for toys of about 6.5 and 4.5 inches. The materials include craft wire and a small bead; in my view the umbrella is for display, not for a young child.

Hold the Paper Pieces Against the Doll
The size in a listing is the doll’s height, not the garment’s, as the autumn set spells out. Height alone still says little about fit: the gentleman outfit, the princess dress and the four-dress set all warn that dolls of the same height can have different proportions. The lined 32 to 35 cm dress is the one listing that also gives a waist, about 25 cm.
Print at 100 percent, cut the pieces from paper and wrap them around the doll. Check that the bodice meets at the back with room for the closure to overlap, that a sleeve or armhole passes over the hand, and that a pull-on neckline clears the head. If the paper is tight, the fabric version will be tighter once seams and hems take their share.
For 18 inch dolls the carnival dress names American Girl, Our Generation and similar dolls. American Girl-style dolls have a vinyl head and limbs attached to a stuffed cloth torso, and height alone does not predict fit. If you sew clothes for a Barbie or a similar fashion doll, the off-shoulder dress is the pattern drafted for that slim body. Handmade dolls vary most, which is why the small-doll sets include notes on adapting.
Seam Allowances and Hems at Doll Scale
A 5/8 inch seam allowance, normal on adult clothes, leaves too much fabric bunched inside a doll sleeve. Two free doll clothes tutorials in the top results use 1/4 inch, and one of the guides hems at 1/4 inch or less for the same reason. Check what your pattern includes before cutting rather than adding your own.
Tiny corners get pulled into the needle plate easily. Starting the seam slightly in from the edge and backstitching to it, or sewing onto a scrap of fabric first and then straight onto the piece, keeps the corner on top of the plate.
Woven edges fray with handling, so finish them before the pieces are joined: a narrow zigzag, or a liquid seam sealant that stabilizes the cut edge. Knits and felt barely fray, which is why the autumn raincoat and boots are cut from felt. On tiny garments, a sleeve is usually easier to sew into the open armhole before the side and underarm seam is closed, if the pattern’s construction allows it.
Fabric Weight and Print Scale
Print scale is what makes handmade doll clothes look right. Two of the guides in the top results recommend small-scale prints, and the four-dress set suggests small florals and polka dots; a print sized for a child’s dress can show a single flower across a doll’s whole bodice.
Thin fabrics keep the seams flat: the fashion doll dress asks for a light, fluid fabric such as fine cotton, viscose or muslin, and the lined dress for light cotton. The jeans can be denim, cotton or linen; at 10 inch doll scale, in my view, a lightweight apparel denim or chambray will turn and press more easily than jeans-weight fabric.
Closures for Small Hands
The closure decides whether a child can dress the doll alone. Pull-on styles, like the fashion doll dress and the elastic strap dress, need nothing. Narrow sew-on hook-and-loop tape is the usual next step, and the carnival dress uses it on the bodice with a snap at the halter.
Buttons and beads look the most realistic, but they are small parts. The gentleman outfit has three or four tiny decorative buttons, and the autumn set lists craft wire and a small bead among its materials, next to the wooden stick for the umbrella handle. If the doll belongs to a child under 3, or one who still puts toys in the mouth, leave off the decorative buttons, use hook-and-loop tape for closures and keep the umbrella, with its wire and bead, out of reach. Other projects for dolls and soft toys are in the dolls and softies section.
FAQ on Fit, Fabric and Hand Sewing
Do I need a machine with a zigzag stitch?
No. Several of these patterns are written for hand sewing: the four-dress set teaches running stitch, backstitch, gathering and slip stitch, and the autumn set and the gentleman outfit are suitable for hand sewing. A zigzag helps finish woven edges; without one, a liquid seam sealant stabilizes the cut edge, or a knit or felt avoids most of the fraying.
Can I glue doll clothes instead of sewing them?
Fabric glue holds trims and decorations, but seams that a child pulls on every day hold up better stitched. Glue also stiffens thin fabric, which shows at doll scale.
What is the easiest first outfit here?
For a beginner, the elastic strap dress is the doll clothes pattern to sew first: one rectangle gathered on elastic and two straps, with no closure. Its designer suggests it as a child’s first sewing project, by hand or with an adult at the machine.
Keep the Corrected Pieces with the Doll
A test version in scrap fabric or an old lightweight shirt shows where the doll is wider or narrower than the pattern. If the doll itself still has to be made, there is also a roundup of patterns for the dolls themselves. Sew the test with the same seam allowance you plan to use, try it on the doll, then adjust the paper before cutting the fabric you care about. Mark every change on the paper pieces, write the doll’s name and height on them and keep them in an envelope with that doll’s other patterns. The next outfit from any of these doll clothes sewing patterns then starts from a fit you have already checked.
